Michelin Guide Tokyo has announced the 2022 edition. With 3 new two-star restaurants, 21 new single stars, and 14 green stars this year, Tokyo retained its title as the city with the most stars. Tokyo was also awarded 35 new Bib Gourmands and 2 new Special Awards. “The MICHELIN Guide will continue to be a witness to the splendor and strength of Tokyo’s gastronomy,” said Gwendal Poullennec, Michelin Guide’s International Director.

Although Tokyo reduced the number of restaurants from 212 stars to 203, it still remains the city with the most Michelin stars. All 12 of Tokyo’s three Michelin-starred restaurants retained their stars. Three one-star restaurants were awarded a Michelin star for the second time. Nihonbashi-Kakigaracho Sugita, Asahina Gastronome, and Crony got their second stars. With these latest innovations, the number of two-star restaurants in the city rose to 41.


The number of one-star restaurants in Tokyo has increased to 150, with 21 new restaurants awarded stars for the first time by the guide. 35 restaurants were added to the Bib Gourmand category. Michelin Guide increased the number of green stars to 14 from 8.

Praise to Tokyo from the Michelin Guide

Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide, talking about Tokyo’s contributions to gastronomy said, “The MICHELIN Guide Tokyo 2008, which was the first edition of the MICHELIN Guide to Japan, was launched with 150 starred restaurants in 15 cuisine categories. Since its debut, Tokyo has not only been at the top of the world’s gastronomy scene, but also a place to create global trends.The 2022 edition, now in its 15th year, highlights 432 restaurants across 36 categories of cuisine, as well as a Bib Gourmand category that celebrates venues with affordable meals. We are also pleased to introduce the new Mentor Chef Award and Service Award this year. The MICHELIN Guide will continue to be a witness to the splendor and strength of Tokyo’s gastronomy.”

Michelin Guide also honored Tokyo gastronomy with special awards. Hiroyuki Kanda of three-Michelin-starred Kanda, received the Mentor Chef Award, while Mayuka Arai of two-Michelin-starred  Hommage received the Service Award.
